Joely Richardson Joins Ethan Hawke in Classic Stage Company’s Ivanov

Joely Richardson has joined the cast of Classic Stage Company’s production of Anton Chekhov’s Ivanov. As previously announced Ethan Hawke stars as the titular government worker, with Richardson tapped to play Anna, Ivanov’s terminally ill wife. Directed by Austin Pendleton, Ivanov begins previews on October 17 and opens on November 4. The show will play a three week limited engagement.

Written by Russian playwright Anton Chekhov in 1887, Ivanov follows a bureaucratic official (Hawke) who loses his zest for life as he deals with his increasingly complicated surroundings, including a suffering wife (Richardson), rising debt and turbulent relationships with the people around him. The play co-stars Glenn Fitzgerald, Roberta Maxwell, George Morfogen, Juliet Rylance, Jonathan Marc Sherman and Louis Zorich.

Richardson has appeared off-Broadway in Side Effects and Madame Melville. Her most recent film Thanks For Sharing will premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. Her many film and TV credits include Nip/Tuck, The Tudors, The Patriot and 101 Dalmatians. 

Ivanov is presented at CSC as part of the company’s Chekhov Cycle, which includes past productions of Uncle Vanya and Three Sisters. The production is translated by Carol Rocamora and features scenic design by Santo Loquasto, costume design by Marco Piemontese, lighting by Keith Parham and original music and sound by Ryan Rumery.
